Sneaky ways to get kids (and fussy adults) to eat more veggies

We all know that to get enough nutrition from our food, we need to eat a variety of vegetables, fruit, meat, nuts and seeds. But what if our kids or ourselves will not eat certain foods and will only limit themselves to only a few foods such as raw carrots or apples and that is it! It can be really frustrating and cause us to just not bother with the nagging. In an ideal world, we would cook a variety of foods, put them on our child’s plate and they would eat eat! But this does not always happen and we may need to sneak veggies into our child’s food. This might be a temporary solution until you build up those missing nutrients which may be causing the fussy eating in the first place. 


These are the things that I personally do to add more nutritional value to my family meals

  • Add in grated and peeled zucchini in any mince based dish

  • Add in grated carrot to mince based dishes

  • Fry eggs in grass fed butter

  • Add in small amount of beef liver into any mince based dish

  • Add chicken broth in sauces or any recipe that requires water 

  • Add a few spoonfuls of cauliflower rice to risotto 

  • Puree baby spinach leaves in a blueberry smoothie - baby spinach is virtually tasteless

  • Stir through sauerkraut juice into a soup that has been slightly cooled

  • Add cooked and puréed cauliflower to white lasagna sauce.

  • Use lentils instead of mince in spaghetti bolognese

  • Add in cooked chicken skins in any puréed soup such as pumpkin soup or potato and leek soup

  • Add a flavourless protein powder to pancake batter

  • Homemade sweet potato chips instead of regular potato chips


Other things you can try are cutting fruits a different way such as slicing apples or using an apple slinky machine instead of giving your child a whole apple or making zucchini ‘noodles’
