Six Sneaky Superfoods To Add Into Your Family Meals

I have a little confession to make.

I have this cupboard in my kitchen next to my stove. It is where I keep some herbs, salt and pepper, cooking oils and fats - and my food additives. Not the artificial kind you are thinking, but the nutrient-dense, easy to hide superfoods that I add (and sometimes sneak in) to my family meals and snacks.

If you have fussy eaters in your house, you would know that you need to get a little creative with getting extra nutrients in.

And it’s not just the kids who need it. 94% of adults don’t eat the recommended serving of vegetables a day and 83% are not getting enough fiber. Is it any wonder so many of us have poor gut health and one or more chronic diseases that can be prevented?

Healthy ingredients in my pantry

Here is a few of those food additives I keep close by when I am cooking

Beef liver powder

Organ meats are one of the most nutrient dense foods that we could eat. They are a great source of protein and are full of iron, B vitamins and zinc. Sadly, most of us have lost touch with the old traditional ways of cooking and we are missing out! With my fussy crew, there is no chance they will eat a plate of liver! The taste is stronger than we are used to and the texture is also unique. So I keep the Cell Square Beef Liver Powder in my cupboard and throw in a teaspoon or two whenever I am making a casserole or mince-based meal such as spaghetti bolognese, lasagna, shepherds pie or tacos. It can also be thrown into a smoothie. The secret here is to start small and increase over time. Also, pair it with another strong tasting ingredient such as red wine in a sauce or kale in a smoothie.

Collagen powder

Collagen powder offers a range of benefits for all ages, helping to restore skin elasticity (I know I need this post pregnancy!), strengthening hair and nails, supporting joints and bones, and most importantly, improving gut health— It also aids muscle recovery, boosts energy, and may promote better sleep. I add this flavourless goodie to my morning coffee, smoothies and milkshakes. I have also added it to pancakes and soup.

Green Banana Starch

Green banana starch is another fantastic addition to my cupboard. It’s a resistant starch that acts as a prebiotic, feeding the good bacteria in our gut. I love to sprinkle it into baked goods such as banana bread or muffins or mix it into chia pudding or smoothies for breakfast. It’s a great way to add fibre without altering the taste of your favourite recipes. Plus, it helps keep you feeling full longer, which is a win-win!

Bone Broth Paste

Next up is bone broth paste. This powerhouse ingredient is rich in collagen, amino acids, and minerals that support gut health and joint function. Bone broth paste is my plan B for the times when I don't have any fresh chicken broth on hand in my fridge or freezer. I often use it as a base for soups and stews and it’s a comforting addition that adds depth to any sauce or dish while boosting its nutritional profile.

Kelp Sea Salt

Then there's kelp sea salt, which not only enhances flavor but also provides a natural source of iodine and other trace minerals. I use it in place of regular salt for seasoning vegetables and meats. It’s a simple swap that can make a big difference, especially for those of us looking to support thyroid health.

Nutra Organics Veggie Hero

Finally, I can’t forget about Nutra Organics Veggie Hero. This blend of 14 organic vegetables, fruit and greens is perfect for sneaking extra nutrients into meals without the fuss. I add it to sauces, smoothies, and even baked goods. It’s an easy way to ensure my family is getting a variety of vitamins and minerals, even on the busiest days.

So there you have it—my cupboard full of nutrient-dense additives that help me keep my family healthy without the fuss. By incorporating these superfoods into our meals, I can increase the amount of nutrients we need to thrive.
