Many women feel stuck when it comes to thinking of healthy snack ideas for themselves. When you are busy with kids, work, housework and everything in between, it is easy just to grab whatever is convenient - even though these convenience foods are far from nutritious. I’m talking about chocolate, biscuits and sugar filled muesli bars just to name a few.

Do we actually need snacks? My approach is all about bio individuality as everyone is unique and has different requirements BUT I typically find with mums that most often than not, a small snack between meals is needed. Snacks will help to keep our energy levels up between meals and give our bodies extra nutrients. Regular (small) servings of protein are also really important for regulating hormones and blood sugar balance. Dysregulated blood sugar levels can lead to weight gain, type 2 diabetes and other preventable diseases

A small snack also will keep our cognitive focus sharp and prevent us from overeating or binging later on in the day or evening.

So what actually is a good healthy snack? Well, I have a few options for you below. With a little bit of preparation in the morning, you can always have a healthy snack on hand.

  •  Veggie sticks of carrots, celery, cucumber or capsicum dipped in hummus

  • Apple slices with peanut butter or almond butter

  • A handful of nuts such as almond, walnuts, cashews or macadamia

  • Seed crackers with avocado, sliced tomatoes and a sprinkle of hemp seeds

  • Coconut yogurt with granola and berries

  • Medjool dates stuffed with nut butter

  • Corn thins with peanut butter

These simple, yet nutrient-dense foods will fill you up and keep you satisfied until the next meal.
